The Tall Ships Arrive
Portsmouth, NH, 23 July 2026
Thursday evening, 23 July, we were tooling around Portsmouth, NH since it was a nice evening and as it worked out was the start of Sail Portsmouth and the parade of tall ships. There was also a concert in Prescott as part of the River House Concert Series. Needless to say there was a lot of activity down by the waterfront.
As is my custom, I was taking a few photos. The black-and-white images were taken on a 70-year-old Nikon F camera. The Color photos were taken on a modern digital camera (A Nikon ZIII if you were wondering). I would like to say that I am partial to one camera or the other, but the truth is that I like them both because they each look at the world differently and let you see different things.
Film is a more deliberate process. I took only one roll of 24 with me (Film Photography Project “Frankenstein” 200 speed, if you are curious). So, I was careful to try to make every shot count. Plus, you really don’t know what you have until you come out of the dark room and look at the negatives in the light. Digital is more laid back and you can see if you like an image in the camera. That is a definite perk. But what I have found is that shooting film has made me a more deliberate digital photographer as well. There is something about taking your time and composing the shot you want as opposed to just taking a lot of pictures and seeing what is good. Don’t get me wrong, there is a place for that technique too.
